Where is Lakes Entrance and How to Get To Lakes Entrance

  • From Melbourne to Lakes Entrance is just over 300km. The drive takes about 4 hours, and includes part of the Melbourne to Sydney scenic coastal drive, from Croajingalong National Park to Gippsland lakes. You can also get there by bus and train.
  • To get from nearby Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance drive is under 40 km and takes approx half an hour there are also regular buses.
  • Merimbula to Lakes Entrance forms part of the Sydney to Melbourne scenic coastal drive and takes around 4 hours. There are buses on this route too and they take just a bit longer at 4.5 hours.
  • From Batemans Bay to Lakes Entrance if you are driving the 441km should take you just under 5.5 hours. By bus it will take you about 7 hours.
  • Canberra to Lakes Entrance you can drive it in just over 5 hours or bus it in under 7 hours. The distance is 423km
  • Lakes Entrance to Mallacoota – drive the 200km in 2.5 hours. The bus route takes quite a bit longer, around 4.5 hours.

Things to do in Lakes Entrance

Many visitors say it’s the best place to visit in Victoria. As well as it’s outstanding natural beauty there are so many things to do in Lakes Entrance. Go higher with a helicopter tour, taking in a bird’s eye view of the Gippsland Lakes. Or go low (underground in fact) and escape the heat with a guided tour of the Buchan Caves, literally one of the coolest places to visit in Victoria and only an hours drive from Lakes Entrance. The beaches in this area are pristine. The northern section of Ninety Mile Beach, Eastern Beach, Lakes Entrance is a perfect place to enjoy kayaking, surfing and windsurfing. Also for beach fishing, crabbing, surfing, swimming and just relaxing or playing on the white sand. Swimming is safest between the flags nearest to the Lakes Entrance RSL.

Another way to enjoy the water are Lakes Entrance River Cruises. A wonderful way to see the beauty of the lakes as well as some of its residents. Children and adults alike will love watching the dolphins, seals and birds that inhabit the gorgeous Gippsland Lakes. For a unique way to experience this part of 90 Mile Beach, there are camel rides too.

More traditionally perhaps Horse riding through the forests and national parks which surround the area is a perfect way to explore Victoria. If two legs are more your style there is a wide range of walking and hiking choices for all ages and levels from 30 minute routes to day long treks.
